In sociology class with week, we will focus on the meaning of culture and variation within and among cultures.
Please note the following assignment schedule:
Monday 8/18 - In-class essay (test grade) on the beliefs of Herbert Spencer versus Karl Marx. Please refer to the Powerpoint, for more information on this assignment.
Tuesday 8/19 (due at beginning of class) - 2.1 "Meaning of Culture"
Wednesday 8/20 (due at beginning of class)- 2.2 "Cultural Variation"
Friday 8/22 (due at beginning of class)- Please write a half-page reflection on the documentary, "Babies," that we watched in class on Thursday. Discuss the factors that account for the ways that babies are raised differently among cultures. Your reflection should address the following:
1. How does the process of socialization differ among the cultures of Mongolia, Namibia, Japan, and the United States? Provide specific examples from the documentary, "Babies" (2010):
2. How do social norms differ among the four cultures?
3. How can observing the ways in which children are raised in different cultures help us to explain whether culture is innate (nature) or learned (nurture)?
4. What cultural universals do the four cultures share?
Friday 8/22 (in class) - In groups, you will be responsible to deliver a 10-minute presentation on a unique culture or counter-culture to the class. The bulk of your presentation should be in the form of a video clip or newspaper article. More information about this assignment will be given in class.
