In APHG this month, our unit of study will encompass "agriculture and rural geography." We will examine historical geography of agriculture, the geography of modern agriculture, and the effect of agriculture on the environment. Please note the assignment schedule: Friday 3/13 - Commodity chain essay needs to be electronically submitted by midnight. Monday 3/16 - Key issue 1 (Where did agriculture originate?) due at the beginning of class. Thursday 3/19 - Key issue 2 (Where are agriculture regions in LDC?) due at the beginning of class. Monday 3/23 - Key issue 3 (Where are agricultural regions in MDC?) due at the beginning of class. Wednesday 3/25 - Key issue 4 (Why do farmers face economic difficulties?) due at the beginning of class. Friday 3/17 - TEST on Agriculture unit. In APHG, we will continue with our unit on "Industrialization and Economic Development." More specifically, we will continue to examine the following key issues: Why does development vary among countries? Why does development vary by gender? Why are energy resources important for development? Why do countries face obstacles to development? Monday 2/23 - Quiz on Development (Chapter 9) - you may use your notes on Key Issues #1-4. Please read through "Financial Integration in Central America: Prospects and Adjustment Needs" (IMF, 2003) before class begins. Be prepared to discuss the following questions: 1.What is the IMF? 2.What are the goals of the IMF? 3.What was the 1997 FSA? 4.What is CAFTA? 5.What is the WTO? In APHG this week, we will conclude with our studies on population and migration patterns. The noted push and pull factors that influence migration from Central America to the U.S. 2. Thursday 10/9 - You will be responsible for delivering a short oral presentation on the parallel reading you selected at the beginning of the quarter.
