Over the next couple weeks in Sociology, we will continue examining the basic principals of cultural conformity and adaptation (Chapter 3). We will begin by discussing the significant barriers to social change-- ethnocentrism, cultural lag, and vested interests-- and apply these barriers to the events of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.
We will also begin to examine social structure as a whole (Chapter 4). We will discuss different types of societies that exist and identify the variety of roles and statuses that individuals fulfill within these societies.
Please note the assignment schedule:
Tuesday 9/2 - Turn in questions on social barriers and the 1960s Civil Rights Movement at the start of class.
Wednesday 9/3 - Read 4.1 before class begins.
Thursday 9/4 - Read 4.2 & 4.3 before class begins. In a half page reflection, discuss how the three barriers to social change (ethnocentrism, vested interests, and cultural lag) present challenges for the African American community today. Think about the U.S. criminal justice system!
Friday 9/5 - Read 4.4 & 4.5 before class begins.
Thursday 9/10 - Review for unit test (in class).
Thursday 9/11 - Test on Chapters 1-4 (Multiple choice and short answer). Please see study guide attached below.
