In Philosophy this week, we will examine influential philosophers of the Enlightenment Era. We will also analyze how ideologies furthered by Enlightenment thinkers contributed to significant changes in England, North America and France, such as the adoption of the English Bill of Rights, the American Revolution, and the French Revolution.
Please note the reading and lecture schedule detailed in the calendars below.
Additionally, working in groups, you will be responsible for delivering a PowerPoint presentation and turning in a 1-page paper that focuses on one of the following questions:
•How did Paine’s Common Sense and Locke’s Second Treatise contribute to the American Revolution?
•How did Rousseau’s Social Contract and Montesquieu’s Spirit of Laws contribute to the French Revolution?
•How did Hobbes’ Leviathan and Locke’s Of Civil Government affect changes in Parliament in England in the 18th century?
The presentation and paper is due Monday, December 8th. You may write the paper individually or as a group, but each group member must turn in a copy of the paper.
